Isle of Skye in a campervan hire

campervan hire

The magical Isle of Skye is one of the most popular camping destinations for a campervan hire in all of Scotland. And no wonder- with stunning mountain ranges, enchanted waterfalls and vibrant local Gaelic culture, Skye offers the best of Scotland.

But best of all, Skye is beloved for what it doesn’t have, and that’s masses of prefabricated hotels, chain restaurants and skylines of high rises. There are just miles and miles of spectacular untamed landscapes. Wild and free- that best describes this fantastic getaway, and the best way to experience it all is in a campervan hire!

Visit Castle Moil in a Campervan Hire

As soon as you cross the Skye bridge, greeted by the moody ruins of Castle Moil, you will start to feel as if you have left all your stresses and workaday worries behind on the mainland. The dramatic Cuillins mountain range, one of the most stunning in Scotland, tower above you, and around every corner the scenery just gets better and better. You won’t miss a thing when you explore Skye in a campervan hire!

Your first stop will be Broadford, where you can stock up on petrol or diesel and supplies. There are several wonderful touring parks with hook-ups, but we find that Skye offers many opportunities to wild camp. Just choose your postcard perfect location and you may have a little piece of Scotland it all to yourself!

It’s easy to drive around the entire island in your motorhome rental and there is so much to see. Highlights for hikers include the famous Fairy Pools in Glenbrittle (be sure to get there early to beat the crowds and get a parking spot!) and the Quairaing. Be sure to get some photos at Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr and Staffin Island from the Staffin Pier. Visit Carbost to tour Talisker Distillery, and take advantage of the shower facilities at the pier.

Campervan Hire and Uig

Don’t overlook the north part of the island- Uig is lovely, and take time to stop at Edinbane Pottery to watch the potters at work and pick up a souvenir of your trip. Then, on to Portree, the main settlement, with its quaint streets and charming eateries. Along the way, there are gardens, ancient brochs, castles and chances to see wildlife, so be sure to take your time to enjoy this gorgeous part of Scotland!

Explore enchanting Scotland this autumn in a campervan rental

campervan rental

Mother nature paints in a brilliant palette of golds, reds and oranges, and there’s no better time to soak it all in. We continue our look at some of the best places to celebrate autumn in Scotland in a motorhome or campervan.

The Hermitage, Perthshire

Head to charming Perthshire in a campervan rental and take a wander around this landscaped, almost cathedral-like, wooded grove of towering trees overlooking the spectacular falls of the River Braan. Perched high above is the delightfully restored Georgian folly of Ossian’s Hall, the perfect spot from which to spy red squirrels and salmon leaping up the falls- quintessential Scotland. The Hermitage is open all year round and access is free of charge.

Killin, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park in a campervan rental

Fuelled by the autumn rain, the Falls of Dochart, one of the most photographed in Scotland, make for a sound and sight spectacular as the water cascades over the rocks and under the bridge. Follow part of the 12-mile route from Killin to Ardtalnaig, along Scotland’s famous Rob Roy Way, for views over the head of Loch Tay towards the Tarmachan Ridge and Ben Lawers range.

Dawyck Botanic Garden, Scottish Borders

Take in the fiery colours at Dawyck Botanic Garden as well as the autumn fruits; from acorns to crab apples, maple keys to fir cones and everyone’s favourites, the conkers produced by the horse chestnut trees. The Garden is a feast for all the senses; make sure to stop by the large Japanese Katsure tree to enjoy its gorgeous caramel scent.

Glentrool, Dumfries & Galloway campervan rental holiday

Wanderers can get lost amongst the trees for an hour or two and gaze out across the tranquil waters of Loch Trool. Part of Galloway Forest Park, the UK’s first dark sky park, stay until night falls at Glentrool and wonder at the magic of a sky studded with thousands of stars. Glentrool is accessible at any time with Glentrool Visitor Centre open 10.30am until 4.30pm daily. There are plenty of beautiful spots to park your campervan rental, so all this majesty is right outside your door.

Get back to nature with motorhome rental holiday this autumn

motorhome rental

Gorgeous colours, crisp air and fewer crowds- there are so many reasons to enjoy a motorhome holiday this autumn. Enjoy the last hurrah of the season by hitting the woodlands for an exhilarating walk (keep an eye out for fairies!) then back to the cosy warmth of your luxury campervan for a dram. Here are just some of the exciting outdoor events going on this fall in Scotland:

Visit an Enchanted Forest in a motorhome rental

The Enchanted Forest returns to Faskally Wood in Pitlochry Thursday 4 October–Sunday 4 November. This year’s atmospheric show, Of The Wild, is firmly rooted in nature highlighting the natural wonders all around and is inspired by the hidden beauty of the wild forest after dark. This spectacular event combines breath-taking visuals, state-of-the-art technologies and a rousing music score that fuses contemporary with traditional. Visitors can follow the winding trail past the mysterious Loch Dunmore deeper into the woods where they will come alive after dark with sights, sounds and scents guaranteed to enchant the senses and surprise curious minds. It’s all right outside your door when you choose a luxury motorhome rental!

Motorhome rental and CowalFest Argyll 2018

Based in Dunoon on the Firth of Clyde, this year’s festival will run from Friday 5 to Friday 12 October (inclusive) with its usual varied and exciting range of carefully graded walks to suit all ages, interests and ability. Fourteen new walks are included alongside old favourites with transport being provided as necessary. The walk leaders and organisers of CowalFest are all volunteers who are keen for others to enjoy the magnificence of the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll.

A mystical walking holiday in a motorhome rental

If spotting dolphins at Chanonry Point off the Black Isle wasn’t magical enough, ‘leaf-peepers’ can indulge in the magic of autumn colours on a walk at Fairy Glen in Rosemarkie. With two picturesque waterfalls, the Fairy Glen was once the scene of a well-dressing ceremony, where the children of the village decorated a pool, next to a spring, with flowers. It was believed that this would ensure the fairies kept the water supply clean.

Fall for an island campervan hire holiday this autumn

campervan hire

Autumn is an enchanting time across Scotland; the leaves turn from luscious green to rich red, gold and fiery orange, there is no better time to explore the country’s scenic islands in the crisp air before getting cosy in your motorhome rental with a warming hot chocolate.

From stargazing on Coll to beachcombing on Lewis, autumn in the most beautiful country in the world is a truly magical time for a holiday in a motorhome!

Island stargazing in a campervan hire

A hive of activity throughout the summer season, autumn on Scotland’s islands is the perfect escape for a campervan hire break to re-charge the batteries before winter sets in. A blanket of reds, golds and oranges lies across the islands and the darker skies glitter with the light of the bright stars.

The Isle of Coll is a designated Dark Sky Island. With little to no light pollution the island is one of the best places in the UK to view the inky night sky and autumn is the perfect time to experience this beautiful natural phenomenon. Alternatively, set off in search of the Northern Lights this autumn and head to the most northerly island group in Scotland, Shetland. With the right conditions, the ‘mirrie dancers’ are most commonly seen from mid-October until mid-March.

Find a postcard perfect spot to wild camp on the islands in your motorhome rental with no crowds in sight.

Campervan hire with beaches all to yourself

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Lewis and Harris as the islands’ world-renowned beaches are likely to be quieter. Head to beaches such as Luskentyre, Seilebost and Hushinish to stroll along pure white sands and breathe in fresh sea air. With wild camping spots as well as touring parks (check operating hours for the winter) you will miss the throngs and enjoy crisp autumn days in peace while you explore the islands in your campervan hire.

Island Time-The Isle of Arran in a Motorhome Hire

motorhome hire

This week we head south from Edinburgh as we continue our motorhome hire exploration of Scotland below the Central Belt and journey to the Isle of Arran.

A jewel in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre, the Isle of Arran is known as “Scotland in Miniature.” At only 19 miles by 10 miles, its varied landscapes give visitors a taste of the entire country, and with a wide range of attractions both natural and man made, since Victorian times it has attracted holiday makers looking for an escape from the big city.

Arran is one of our top picks for an outdoor lover’s motorhome hire break, with adventures ranging from hillwalking to mountain climbing to kayaking. But it also offers more mild experiences, including world-class fare, history, scenery and culture.

Taking your motorhome or campervan rental on the ferry from Adrossan to Brodick is easier than it sounds- simply straight on, straight off. In no time you will be on island time!

Hiking and motorhome hire

Be sure to pack your hiking boots, because there are enough mountain ranges on the north of the island to keep you busy for weeks. From Goatfell, the island’s highest peak at 2,866ft (874m) you’ll get an amazing view of the mountains, coastline and glens. The Arran Coastal Walk provides the ultimate stroll, with a well-maintained and marked route that you can tackle over multiple days or simply amble at your leisure. The route starts and ends at the official monument on Brodick’s shorefront near the ferry terminal. Be sure to have your photo taken here with the backdrop of Goatfell!

Explore heritage sites such as Brodick Castle & Country Park and the Arran Heritage Museum, or tour The Isle of Arran Distillery at Lochranza. At the end of the day, treat yourself to ‘home’ cooked fare in your motorhome hire with world famous Arran produce, such as cheese, oatcakes, chutneys, ice cream and fresh seafood. And if you fancy some nightlife, hit the pubs, where you will often find live music ranging from folk to jazz.

Wild camping in a motorhome hire

Whether you prefer to wild camp in your motorhome hire or set up base camp at a touring park (or a combination) you’ll find the perfect spot for your luxury home away from home on Arran. We suggest booking touring parks in peak season to avoid disappointment.

There is so much to see and do on Arran, but you’ll want to leave some time for simply kicking back, soaking up the peace and quiet and enjoying the views from your luxury campervan rental- after all, isn’t that what island life is all about?

Exploring Dumfries and Galloway in an automatic campervan rental

automatic campervan rental

While motorhome enthusiasts often think that the Highlands offer the most scenic camping holidays in Scotland, the areas south of the Central Belt are outstanding destinations, too. From the Clyde Valley to Ayrshire to Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland offers woodland tranquillity, fascinating history and coastal beauty that are perfect for exploring in an automatic campervan rental.

Automatic Campervan Rental through Dumfries and Galloway

In our next series of blogs about holidays in Scotland, we head south to beautiful Dumfries and Galloway. Between Galloway Forest Park and the Colvend Coast in Scotland, there is something for every camper’s taste, along with wee charming villages to explore, such as Portpatrick, Wigtown, Castle Douglas, Kirkbean and Kirkcudbright.

An outdoor playground in your own backyard:

Galloway Forest Park in an automatic campervan rental

Known as “the Highlands of the Lowlands”, Galloway Forest Park is a favourite destination for families looking for both adventure and tranquillity. Pack your hiking boots, bicycles, kayak, telescope or fishing gear, because the park is a big 97,000-hectares playground where couples can get away from it all and families can bond over outdoor adventures. Galloway is also a Dark Sky Park, which means the night sky comes alive like you never see it in the city. Pick out constellations or see the planets up close at the park’s big telescope and night sky viewing events. When you spend your Galloway Forest Park holiday in a motorhome, your next escapade is as far as your front door and there’s no limit to how much you can pack in!

Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses: Scotland’s Best Beaches in a Motorhome Rental

motorhome rental

This heatwave of late has turned Scotland’s spectacular beaches into Caribbean-like settings with 30 degrees plus temps- except unlike the Caribbean, the days never end in Scotland! The best way to capture the summer sun and sand is in a motorhome, so you can just take all the comforts of home with you while the surf is just outside your doorstep.

Which Scotland beach will you explore in your motorhome or campervan hire this summer? We share our favourite seaside destinations…

Hushinish Beach, Isle of Lewis in a motorhome rental

Take your campervan rental down the 12-mile road and you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Atlantic and the Sound of Scarp. Considered a rival to any tropical paradise, Hushinish is a hidden gem, so you just might have it all to yourself as you explore rock pools surrounded by a carpet of summer flowers. Visit the nearby castle and whaling station, or hike to other beaches across the moor. Add to all this a glamping experience in a motorhome hire and it’s our idea of beach heaven.

Rare wildlife and a remote setting for a motorhome beach holiday

Motorhome rental and Smerclate Beach, South Uist

Wildlife watchers and those who really want to get away from it all will love discovering Smerclate Beach in a motorhome rental. Silver ribbons of sugary sand and machair frame turquoise waters, and this time of year the flowers put on a fantastic display. Nearby Loch Druidibeg and Balranald Nature Reserves provide hours of fascinating bird watching, including the elusive corncrake. A remote beach, we love to load up on supplies and escape to Smerclate in a campervan hire, where we can feel like we are the only people in the world.

Saltcoats Beach, Ayrshire, family fun in the Scotland sun by motorhome rental

Saltcoats Beach, located a few miles north of Irvine, between Ardrossen and Saltcoats, is a favourite for families looking to escape summer in the city for paddle. The shallows go out for a long way, which is great for swimming with kids, and the fine sand is perfect for building sand castles. Walk the promenade to the harbour, where there are childrens’ rides and eateries. With plenty of facilities and stunning views over the Clyde and the Isle of Arran, Saltcoats Beach is a fantastic day out for the whole family. Load up the gang in a motorhome rental and live for the weekend at Saltcoats.

Vanderlust: A Highlands and Islands of Scotland Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 7

campervan hire

It’s been a romantic week exploring the Highlands and Islands of Scotland in our campervan hire from Roseisle and we don’t want to go home. One week wasn’t enough to see everything so I would recommend at least two weeks. What a feeling of freedom we had on the open road- and with the luxurious touches of our campervan rental, we don’t miss our own house at all.

This morning we awoke to a cloudy sunrise in Oban, with views over the Firth of Lorn to go with our breakfast. We got an early start so we could drive on Edinburgh to return our campervan rental. The amazing team at Roseisle, especially Louise who checked us in, made sure we had everything we needed to make the most of our holiday all the way to the end.

We absolutely loved this Hymer Yosemite campervan rental. We were a bit nervous about moving up to a larger model this year, but found it easy to drive, park and get anywhere we wanted to go. The use of space in this campervan is magic- there’s a spot for everything yet we never felt really cramped, even in the washroom.

Campervan hire in a Hymercar Yosemite

We definitely recommend the Hymer Yosemite or a comparable size for the couple who wants to camp in style, yet still get around the Highlands of Scotland with ease. You could bring young children and still have room for everyone to sleep and eat. There is even a TV but we never turned it on the entire week- the views out our windows were too picturesque!

We love to wild camp, and this campervan hire was the ideal model for our travel style- thanks to Heather and Emanuel at Roseisle for helping us choose it. Even first time campers need not be nervous, because the friendly Roseisle team assisted us every step of the way, from choosing the campervan hire that was perfect for us, to taking us on a thorough tour of the vehicle, to an easy check out and check in process. And, as always, the campervan was immaculate and fully stocked, down to loo roll, a torch and road maps. All we had to do was show up with our luggage.

Glamping it in a campervan hire

This has been our best glamping experience in a campervan hire yet. For those who want to get the most out of a Scottish holiday, this really is the best way to go. It’s perfect for those of us who don’t fancy the idea of roughing it every night but still crave the outdoors. We love exploring hidden gems where there is nothing between us and Scotland’s world class land and seascapes!

Vanderlust: A Highlands and Islands of Scotland Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 6

campervan hire

On this leg of our weeklong campervan hire adventure, we travelled from Achnahaird Beach in spectacular Wester Ross to charming Oban, the Seafood Capital of Scotland. From a beachy sunrise to spectacular waterfalls to a bayside sunset, we’ve seen some of the best of the Highlands of Scotland in just 24 hours.

Campervan Hire and Oban

Our destination for the night was Oban, our favourite seaside town in the West Highlands. Besides the hospitality, shopping and sunsets, Oban is famous for its fish and chips- best enjoyed al fresco while sitting on a bench on the esplanade.

As we drove toward Inverness and Loch Ness in our campervan rental, we saw several red kites flying overhead, with their distinctive tails. Always looking for new destinations on our routes, we stopped at Invermoriston. This small village is easy to overlook when travelling this route with so many glamorous attractions, such as Urquhart Castle and the Loch Ness Monster exhibition at Drumnadrochit, but this hidden gem is well worth a stop- and there wasn’t a crowd like at the more popular sites.

There is a picturesque Thomas Telford bridge spanning the river and the impressive waterfalls. The entire scene is incredibly charming and it’s well worth an hour or so walking the forest trails along the falls and over the bridge.

Fort Augustus in a Campervan Hire

Just down the road is delightful Fort Augustus, where the Caledonian Canal locks take boats into and out of Loch Ness. The town is built around the locks, and there are plenty of eateries and shops, including fuel. We took a walk along the canal esplanade while enjoying an ice cream and the views over the village and loch.

The drive between Fort Augustus and Oban in our campervan hire has to be one of the more beautiful in Scotland. No matter how many times we see Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, it never fails to take our breath away. Even in early spring, the peak is covered in snow, and for those who like to ski, the powder is usually excellent all the way through April. Driving through Fort William and along the sea lochs is a treat as we head south to the “Wee Bay”- Oban- for the night.

We got into town just in time to take an Oban Walking Tour, which was a fun and informative stroll through this lovely seaside town. Our amazing guide told us about the history of Oban as well as some entertaining Celtic legends and stories about the town’s past. We worked up an appetite for fish and chips- enjoyed whilst sitting on the esplanade and watching the boats come in and out of the bay. A perfect ending to a perfect day of sightseeing in Scotland from our campervan hire!

Vanderlust: A Highlands and Islands of Scotland Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 5

campervan hire

After good night’s sleep in our Hymer Yosemite campervan hire’s comfy bed, we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise and a sunny day for the ferry from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides to Ullapool on the mainland.

We spent the night at a touring park near Stornoway, with showers and a washroom, however our campervan rental is self-contained so it is easy to get ready for the day without even leaving the campervan. I love all the homely touches of this campervan rental! We did, however, take the chance to power up the habitat battery and empty our wastewater.

Hymercar Yosemite Campervan Hire

This Hymer Yosemite model is nimble and easy to manoeuvre around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland- however it does not compromise on the use of space. We can prepare and entire meal in the kitchen and with the roomy fridge we can stock up for the week. The brilliant team at Roseisle stocked the campervan hire with all the essentials you could possibly need – towels, bedding, pillows, kettle, coffee maker, teapot and pots pans dishes and flatware- even the dish soap is included. Roughing it is a thing of the past in campervan hire from Roseisle!

The ferry to Ullapool is one of the Hebridean bigger ferries that we have travelled on and it was very easy to manoeuvre our campervan rental on board. In addition to a cafe and lounge areas, there is an observation deck where you can look out for dolphins and whales. There was a marine biologist on our ferry who was doing our research and watching for the marine wildlife. We did not see any dolphins or whales but we saw sea eagles, buzzard and numerous other sea birds.

Wester Ross in a campervan hire

The area around Ullapool, called Wester Ross, is surely one of the most breathtaking areas in Scotland, where dramatic seas meet rugged mountains and eagles soar overhead. We spotted a sandy, out of the way beach on the map called Achnahaird, and it looked promising for some really wild camping in our campervan hire. What awaited us was more wonderful than we could have ever imagined!

We reached the beach by driving our campervan hire through the gorgeous Assynt-Coigach National Scenic Area and past iconic Stac Polly, one of the more popular climbing summits in the Highlands of Scotland. As Achnahaird Beach came into view, we were gobsmacked- a wide expanse of sugar sand framed by magnificent geologic formations such as sea stacks and caves- all surrounded by the mountainscape on three sides and gently lapping azure waters on the fourth. Flocks of guillemots and oystercatchers made for lively viewing as we spent the afternoon beachcombing, once again all by ourselves with no buildings or other people anywhere in view. We could get used to this luxury campervan rental lifestyle!

Vanderlust: A Highlands and Islands Adventure in a Campervan Hire- Day 4

campervan hire

It rained overnight but in our luxury Hymercar Yosemite campervan hire from Roseisle, we slept like babies. By morning the clouds were moving out and we woke to a beautiful view over the cliffs at the Port of Lewis lighthouse. We saw two sea eagles as we drove out- that makes several eagles we have seen so far on our trip!

After a leisurely breakfast, we headed in our campervan hire towards Stornoway, Scotland, a fine seaside town with everything you need to stock up on groceries and supplies for your campervan rental, as well as lots to explore.

We took a stroll around the grounds and quick look through Lews Castle, a Victorian wonder built by the man who owned the entire island of Lewis at one time. Then we treated ourselves to a bite at one of Stornoway’s excellent eateries before hitting the independent shops to browse and stock up on some local treats, such as the town’s famous smoked fish and black pudding, plus some delicious goodies from the busy bakery.

Tolsta in a campervan hire

Thus fortified, we loaded back in our campervan hire to explore the Tolsta area near Stornoway, where we heard there was a great beach- you never run out of stunning beaches in Scotland. A short time later, we came on the parking lot for Garry Beach- the beach itself reached by walking down a steep hill- not very far but recommended for the fairly fit, because you also have to walk back up!

Visit Garry Beach in a campervan hire

Garry Beach was totally worth the walk- dramatic high cliffs frame this golden sand beach, where deep blue waves lap and break on the striking geologic features, such as caves and sea stacks, that make this place so stunning, even by Scotland’s standards. We had the beach to ourselves and spent a couple of hours here in the sun- heaven!

Our ferry leaves tomorrow morning for the Scotland mainland from Stornoway, so we’ve made reservations at a nearby touring park, where we can top up our battery, empty our toilet and use the WiFi. They have a toilet and showers here, but honestly, it’s so much nicer in our campervan rental so we’re not even using them.

Time to turn in and get a good night’s sleep- tomorrow our destination is Wester Ross, where we expect to see more eagles.

Time to turn in and get a good night’s sleep- tomorrow our destination is Wester Ross, where we expect to see more eagles.

Vanderlust- A Highlands and Islands Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 3 Part 2

campervan hire

What an amazing day of exploring the Isle of Harris on our Highlands and Islands Adventure through Scotland in our Hymer Yosemite

campervan hire from Roseisle!

After our morning stroll down stunning Luskentyre Beach, we were eager to hit another bucket list stop- the Callanish stone circle on the Isle of Lewis. The landscape through which we drove in our campervan hire was a magnificent melange of mountains, valleys and seascapes.

Cruising through one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland is even better in this luxurious Hymercar Yosemite. Like everything, the front seats are designed for comfort on long trips and the view is second to none. Navigating rural unfamiliar roads is a breeze with the Satnav, and with its Bluetooth capabilities, we are enjoying road trip music from our phones. Get your motor running and head out on the highway- it’s a ‘Born to be Wild’ feeling, but with all the comforts of home!

Callanish in a campervan hire

After lunch we made a beeline to Callanish, and as we approached, the sight of this mysterious, brooding 5,000-year-old stone circle overlooking the valley made us both gasp. The other stone circles we have visited, such as at Kilmartin and Orkney, are situated on flat areas, but being high on a hill, the Callanish circle is particularly impactful- not to mention one of the best preserved in Scotland. We spent the entire afternoon taking in this and the other sets of stone circles on adjoining hills, all dramatically dominating this ancient land and seascape.

Our next stop was Dun Carloway, one of the best preserved in Scotland. At an astonishing 9 metres high in some places, this broch, built around 200 BCE, makes for fun and fascinating exploration- and the views are amazing.

Campervan hire Lewis

On a whim, we decided to head to the northernmost end of Lewis, called the Butt, to visit the historic lighthouse and cliffs. The Hebridean Way hiking/cycling trail ends here, and while it’s officially the windiest place in, not just Scotland, but all of Britain, the views are worth a visit. There are sugary beaches and dramatic seascapes here, where the waves crash violently against the cliffs, and seabirds are abundant. As there was no one around, (bliss!) we decided to stay here for the night, and were rewarded with one of the most magnificent sunsets we have ever seen here at the edge of Scotland.

Tomorrow, we are Stornoway bound in our luxury Hymercar from Roseisle Campervan Hire!

Vanderlust- A Highlands and Islands Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 3

campervan hire scotland

It’s been a bucket list-ticking kind of day on our Highlands and Islands Adventure in a campervan from Roseisle and we are only halfway through!

After landing in Uig, we rolled off the ferry in our Hymer Yosemite, and down the road to Luskentyre Beach. It was dark by the time we pulled in to a wild camping spot right before the beach itself, behind the sand dunes. Lucky for us, there were three campers maximum allowed here, and we were the third. There was an honesty box and a small charge for the space and toilets for those who need them. However, we were self contained, which was such a comfort on our campervan hire trip.

Campervan hire in a Hymercar Yosemite

The washroom was one of the highlights of this Hymer Yosemite campervan for me- after all, even when camping you are sure to appreciate the medicine cabinet, mirrors, nooks for toiletries, the handy pull-down basin, powerful sink/shower nozzle and easy to operate loo. When you close the door, the whole thing is totally separate from the living quarters and surprisingly roomy. A hot shower in the comfort of your campervan hire after a long day of hiking and sightseeing- heaven!

This morning we awoke, made steaming mugs of coffee in our campervan rental kitchen, headed over the gorgeous dunes and machair and came out on one of the most spectacular beaches we have ever seen- glorious Luskentyre, or Losgaintir in Gaelic. No people, no buildings, no vehicles in sight- just the soothing sound of the ocean and nothing but stunning views.

Lewis & Haris in a Campervan Hire

Eager to explore the archaeological wonders of Lewis, we hit the road for Harris. The two are actually on landmass but considered two islands, and the roads here are among the best maintained in Scotland, so it was smooth driving through spectacular scenery in our luxury campervan hire. We were tempted to stop at the Isle of Harris Distillery, which we passed, but it was a bit early for a nip! We just stopped for lunch at a friendly community run café and are ready for our next bucket list adventure- Callanish Stone Circle and Dun Carloway

Vanderlust, A Highlands and Islands Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 2

campervan hire

We started the second day of our Scotland campervan hire tour with a magnificent moonset/sunrise from the Skye Bridge that we enjoyed from the comfort of our bed.

Campervan hire in a Hymercar Yosemite

Our Hymer Yosemite campervan features a generous bed in the rear with plenty of storage underneath for our gear and our musical instruments, as well as lots of handy drawers and cubbyholes for clothes, shoes and personal items. The bed is super comfy, so we slept like babies, and while the cutaway part of the bed takes some getting used to, it makes it super easy to store and retrieve our gear stored underneath.

Our next stop in our Hymercar Yosemite was the fabled Fairy Pools in Glenbrittle. We arrived mid-morning, just in time to squeeze in a parallel parking spot that wasn’t too far from the trailhead. Our tip- get to the pools EARLY if you want to beat the crowds. We enjoyed a leisurely hike up the extraordinary series of waterfalls and clear azure pools and even saw a few brave souls taking the plunge for a swim-brrrrrrr!

Old Man of Storr in a campervan hire

We travelled next to the Old Man of Storr, one of Scotland’s most iconic rock formations. The steep climb up the hill isn’t what you would call leisurely, but it was invigorating and as the mist parted and the sun came out, the sweeping views were revealed in all their glory- wow!

Nearby Kilt Rock also offered splendid vistas as well, and a perfect spot to enjoy the view from our campervan for an afternoon repast, prepared in the comfort of our fully equipped campervan hire’s kitchen and enjoyed on the easy-to-assemble dining table.

The Hymer Yosemite kitchen features a two burner hob, roomy fridge and plenty of workspace- the sink and hob tops fold down and the counter can be extended for extra room. And as always, the Roseisle team stocks everything we’ll need to dine in style, including plenty of pots, dishes, utensils and towels- we didn’t need to bring anything except our personal belongings because they think of everything.

At Uig we boarded the ferry- a breeze to do in the nimble Hymer Yosemite campervan hire– and now we are sailing off to the Isle of Harris into a perfect sunset. Tomorrow- the beach!

Vanderlust-A Highlands and Islands Adventure in a Campervan Hire: Day 1

campervan hire

This week we are following the campervan hire adventures of travel gurus Michelle and Rab as they explore the Highlands and Islands in one of our Medium 2 campervans, the luxurious Hymer Yosemite.

When we want to really immerse ourselves in the magnificence of Scotland’s spectacular scenery and vibrant culture, a campervan hire is our favourite way to hit the road. So when we wanted to explore Wester Ross and the Isles of Lewis and Harris, our first stop was Roseisle Luxury Campervans in Edinburgh.

First class service for campervan hire in Scotland!

At Roseisle Campervan Hire, you are always greeted with a warm welcome and cuppa- and if you are repeat customers as we are, it’s big hugs all around. Louise took us on a helpful tour of our home on wheels for the week- a Medium 2 Hymer Yosemite campervan. For all of its generous living space, it doesn’t lack maneuverability- not to mention its stylish look and Louise made sure we were comfortable with everything before we took off.

Westward ho for our Scotland adventure

We had reservations for the ferry from Uig, on Skye, to Tarbert, on Harris, for the next evening, so we decided to make it to Skye the first night- that way we could do some exploring before we caught the ferry. We went to Skye last year on our Scotland campervan adventure, but we wanted to check out the Fairy Pools a bit more. By early afternoon we were westward bound in our luxury campervan hire and with every mile we put between the workaday routine and us the more exhilarated we felt!

A Yosemite campervan hire drives like a dream around Scotland’s hills and glens

The Yosemite campervan drives wonderfully. The 2.3 litre engine eats up the miles, hills and glens without breaking sweat- and when you are touring in Scotland, you need that power. It has the turning circle of a Bolshoi ballerina and manoeuvres well in small spaces, so parking is a dream. The gearbox takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you learn how to use it, it’s a piece of cake.

The drive between Edinburgh and the Skye Bridge is breath taking, with many photo ops and places to stop and enjoy the view, including the incredible Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most photographed.

Driving over the Skye Bridge as dusk, we had a wild camping spot in mind but decided to top off our fuel first and pulled in to Kyleakin. We found no fuel station here; however, there were plenty of spots for campervans in the parking lot overlooking the bridge for us to spend the night- plus the bonus of two pubs that were emanating the delicious aroma of fried fish and the sounds of live music. It was growing dark, so we decided that maybe the wild blue yonder could wait one more day!

As soon as we walked into the pub, we were greeted warmly and in no time we were devouring freshly landed fish suppers and grooving to the sounds of the band. The joint was jumping and when the singer asked if anyone wanted to join in for a song, Rab nipped out to the campervan to get his mandolin and join in for a couple of rousing sing-alongs as the full moon rose. What a great start to our campervan hire holiday in Scotland, what will tomorrow bring?

The Angus Coastal Route in a motorhome hire

motorhome hire

Stunning coastlines, spectacular castles, top rate golf and two of the most stylish cities in Scotland await you when you explore the Angus Coastal Route in a motorhome.

While the North Coast 500 might get a lot of press, the Angus Coastal Route boasts 58 miles of equally beautiful beaches and gorgeous landscapes, and is convenient to Edinburgh, where you will pick up your motorhome hire at Roseisle. Starting in Dundee, the Coastal Route takes you north, through the charming seaside towns of Broughty Ferry, Inverbervie, Stonehaven and Carnoustie, and ends in Aberdeen.

Motorhome hire and RSS Discovery

Stock up on supplies in Dundee, known as the sunniest city in Scotland, and take time for a stroll along the beautifully developed River Tay waterfront and visit the RSS Discovery.

Head north on the A92 in your campervan and soon you will reach Carnoustie, home of one of the world’s most famous golf courses. We recommend booking a tee time to avoid disappointment, especially in summer. Tee times can be booked on the Championship Course, Burnside Course or Buddon Links Course- or go for the combination ticket and immerse yourself in one of the best golf experiences on Earth!

The next area to explore in your motorhome is the famous town of Arbroath, home of the world renowned smokies- that’s haddock dried in salt and smoked over oak and beech chips over whisky barrels. Be sure to stock up on some to enjoy and explore the picture perfect harbour.

Lunan Bay in a motorhome hire

The next stop is Lunan Bay, voted one of the best beaches in Scotland, where you can camp and soak up some of the sun the area is famous for. Right outside your door is Lunan’s long sweep of sugar sand beach- but inside your luxury motorhome hire, you have all the comforts of home.

Heading north, the next item on our Angus Coastal Route bucket list is the amazing Dunnottar Castle. Located south of Stonehaven, it is perched high above the North Sea atop 200 feet high sea cliffs and can be reached from the visitors’ parking lot. However, we suggest parking at Stonehaven and walking the three-mile cliff side path to the castle, where you will get the best views. You can take a land train back again to your motorhome hire.

Your final destination is Aberdeen, where the vibrant culture, shopping and night life is one of the finest in Scotland. Most any time of year you will find a festival going on, not to mention fine dining, world class shopping and live music.

If you are looking for a shorter motorhome hire holiday that ticks all the boxes, we recommend The Angus Coastal Route!

Chasing the ghost of Rob Roy across Perthshire in a campervan rental

campervan rental

Robert MacGregor, aka Rob Roy may be the hero of Sir Walter Scott’s and Daniel Defoe’s novels, but he was also a real life figure, whose story of outlaw romance can be traced through one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland when you choose to holiday in a motorhome from Roseisle.

Known as the “Robin Hood of Scotland”, Rob Roy (in Gaelic, Raibert Rubah, or “red headed Robert”) was in truth, an infamous 17th-18th century businessman turned cattle rustler and brigand, who achieved folk hero status as a supporter of the Jacobite cause. According to legend (and a film starring Ralph Fiennes as the dashing Rob) he was forced to turn outlaw when he was robbed and couldn’t afford to pay his debts.

Southern Perthshire in a campervan rental

Today, you can follow in the literal footsteps of the man himself throughout southern Perthshire between Loch Tay and the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It’s only a short drive in a campervan rental from Edinburgh, Scotland to Drymen, where you can catch the Rob Roy way and do some hiking. Explore the gorgeous countryside of Scotland through charming wee villages such as Aberfeldy, Callender and Killen, with its famous waterfall and along scenic Loch Tay. Camp in the luxurious comfort of your campervan rental-along with a spectacular view of the Tarmachan Ridge or Ben Lawers. Choose to fish, hike, cycle or simply soak up the peaceful vibes that you can only get from nature, in one of Scotland’s most celebrated landscapes!

Finish your Rob Roy themed camping holiday in Balquidder, the burial place of our hero, near the east end of beautiful Loch Voil. History buffs will enjoy exploring the 17th century kirk ruins (located in front of the “new” 19th century church), and the MacGregor family stones with their fine carvings.

Immerse yourself in your own enchanted Scottish tale when you hire a motorhome from Roseisle and explore Perthshire, Rob Roy country.
